Art gallery in the town of. The same year it opened its first exposition. In 1983 it moved to its new , specially designed building, where it has 1300 sq. m. of exhibition space, a fund of storage, working premises, a studio for restoration and conservation.
The art collection of the gallery has more than 2200 works by Bulgarian and foreign artists, represented in different genres of painting, graphics and sculpture, with a particular interest in artists permanently linked to the Rhodope Mountains.
The permanent exposition of the Smolyan Art Gallery presents works by some of the most prominent representatives of Bulgarian fine arts – Vladimir Dimitrov – the Master, Bencho Obreshkov, Nenko Balkanski, Anastas Staykov, Zlatiu Boyadzhiev, David Perets, Vasil Barakov, Alexander Mutafov, Raphael Mikhailov, Dechko Uzunov, Stoyan Venev, Ilia Beshkov and others.
The “Rhodope” character of most of the works in the Smolyan Gallery determines the specificity of its exposition. Many of the works are inspired by the Rhodope nature, lifestyle, history, and rich local traditions.
A special place among them is occupied by the collection “Orpheus in the Bulgarian Fine Arts”.It includes small sculptures by Valentin Starchev , Margarita Pueva ; canvases by Dobri Dobrev, Atanas Patsev, prints by Petar Chuklev, Zafir Yonchev, Atanas Neykov.
