Sokolitsa is the name of one of the emblematic peaks of the beautiful town of Smolyan. It rises 1701 meters above sea level and its climbing is a real Rhodope challenge, combining both easier and harder mountain climbing.
The emblematic peak is located between the famous winter resort of Pamporovo and another emblematic for Smolyan eco-trail – the Nevyastata. The well-defined trail leading to the summit starts from a gazebo with a widening, enough for parking 4-5 cars, located above the road.
About 300 metres after the gazebo the path is easy. But then, reaching a stone-made arrow pointing upwards, there is a steep climb up a hardly noticeable forest path. The chance of getting lost here is almost nil, as the forest is old and quite sparse.
After about 400 metres of difficult route you have reached your goal and can now proudly declare that you have climbed Mt Sokolitsa. Once you have climbed the peak, a wonderful view opens up in front of you – Smolyan, Perelik, Pamporovo, the peaks of Prespa and Svoboda stretch out like a palm before your eyes. If you hit good weather you can boldly claim that you have seen half of Rhodope.
Of course, the peak of Sokolitsa is not overlooked by legends and ancient legends glorifying the indomitable and indomitable spirit of a Rhodope woman.
