The Monastery of St. Athanas is located in the Varadil locality, about 5 km south of the Raykovo district of Smolyan, on the road to the village of Chokmanovo. It was built in 1879 on the ruins of a medieval chapel by Hadji Margarit. The place was not chosen by chance.
It was pointed out by the saint himself in the dreams of a pious old woman. In 1912 it was the headquarters of Colonel Vladimir Serafimov. The temple exists in its present form thanks to the joint efforts of believers and heirs of Haji Margarit. St. Athanasius the Great is one of the defenders of the Christian faith.
He was born in Alexandria around 295 and died on May 2, 376. For this reason, his memory is commemorated on January 18 and May 2. Many people visit the monastery on these days, and those who wish to explore it at other times of the year can contact the residents of the villa area nearby to arrange access to the church and complex.
