Opened on 30.X.1981 in the Gjordje House (in the Raykovo district), a monument of the Rhodope architecture from the XIX century. It has 200 sq. m. of exhibition space, a multifunctional building with 50 seats and a cinema booth.
The collection presents Laszlo Nagy (1925-1978), a prominent Hungarian poet, publicist, translator of Bulgarian folk songs and poetry, artist, winner of the International Botev Prize (1976), honorary citizen of Smolyan (1976). Laszlo Nagy’s great contribution to Bulgaria and the Rhodopes is that he makes our songs and the best of Bulgarian poetry accessible to the Hungarian reading public. Through the poet’s manuscripts, translations, drawings, personal belongings and photographs, Laszlo Nagy’s activities in Bulgaria from the late 1940s to 1978 are shown – his student years, first travels around Bulgaria and study of its cultural heritage, meetings and lasting ties with Bulgarian poets and writers in Smolyan and the Rhodope Mountains. A bronze bas-relief of Janos Oros – “The Poet with a Flower” – is installed at the entrance of the house. It is a gift from the Hungarian Embassy, with whose assistance more exhibits have been obtained and a traditional village room from Laszlo Nagy’s homeland has been furnished. In the courtyard, a thematic collection “Laszlo Nagy in the work of Bulgarian artists” of paintings, prints and sculptures is displayed. Periodically, thematic collections, including drawings and sketches by Laszlo Nagy, graphic works by Sándor Lazar based on Laszlo Nagy’s poems, etc., are exhibited in the hall adapted for temporary exhibitions.
