The fortress is situated on a conical marble peak with an altitude of 1006 m. During the Iron Age and the Late Bronze Age the peak was used as a sanctuary. During the Early Bronze Age and Late Neolithic the peak was also visited. Single ceramic fragments are found on the slope.
The fortress “Kaleto” at the village of. Koshnitsa was a military post controlling (together with the Smolyan Fortress) the communications along the Central Trans-Doptic Road through the Middle Rhodopes (Smolyan Municipality), which connected the two strategic roads.
