One of the natural attractions of Smolyan is the Centenary Tree – Chinar (Plantatus orientalis – Eastern Chinar), which is 289 years old. It was brought in 1720 from Belomorje (Greece) and planted in the “old centre” of Smolyan. The century-old tree is part of an impressive ensemble including a mosque and a Christian church with the only wooden bell tower on the territory of the municipality.
The crown of this tree is about 600sq m in size. The tree is 25 metres high, with a trunk circumference of nearly 7 metres. For the last 50 years it has been protected by the state as a natural landmark, declared by Order No. 508/28.03.1968 of the Ministry of Forests and Forest Industry.
