About the cave

  • Uhlovitsa Cave has been explored by the Studenets Cave Club, town of Uhlovitsa. It was discovered in the village of Stedenka, Chepelare, by Dimitar Raychev. It is one of the oldest in the Rhodope Mountains – over 3 500 000 years old. Two-storey, abyssal, with a length of 460m the cave impresses with its numerous secondary cave formations. Among the stalactites and stalagmites, dendrites make a strong impression – formations that will make you feel as if you were on the seabed. The landscaped part of the cave ends with a snow-white limestone waterfall and four sinter lakes that fill with water in spring.
  • The cave was officially opened to the public on September 8, 1984. The altitude at the entrance is 1040 m and the vertical drop to the lowest point in the cave is -25 m. The temperature is a constant 10 – 11ºC. The length of the well-maintained part is 330 m, which is covered by a path and 280 metal steps.
  • The entrance to the cave is reached by a steep path 800 m long, followed by 190 metal steps. The vertical drop from the car park to the entrance is 160 m.
  • The cave is inhabited by 8 species of bats during different seasons of the year.
